Meet some Underdogs
Chance: West Philadelphia, Born and Raised
Every great love story starts somewhere. For Chance, it started with neighbors who noticed he was spending a lot of time outside — and decided to do something about it.
Those neighbors reached out to Underdogs, and from there, we were able to connect with Chance's elderly owner and start making a real difference. We got Chance set up with an insulated dog house, an outdoor dog bed, a tent for weather protection, and a crate so that when the weather gets bad, the neighbors can bring him inside. That last part says everything about the trust that's been built — Chance's owner now feels comfortable enough to open the door and let that happen. We made sure he was up to date on vaccines and on monthly preventatives, and when his owner needs a little help making ends meet, we're there with cat and dog food to keep both of them going. But the most important is the lasting bond between Chance and the neighbors who never stopped paying attention.
These days, Chance gets enrichment walks and hikes around the city, thanks to his dedicated neighbors — and the joy is written all over his face every single time. Catch him on any given day and you just might find him posted up, staring longingly in the direction of his favorite humans house, waiting for them to come over and give him some love.
Chance's story is a good reminder that you don't always need a dramatic rescue to change a dog's life. Sometimes it takes a caring neighbor, a few key resources, and a relationship built one walk at a time.

Kenny
Kenny: An A+ Student
Kenny came into his current home through a winding path. Adopted by a young family member who eventually couldn't keep him, Kenny landed with an elderly relative who loves him dearly. The only problem? Kenny is a young and bouncy pup, with energy to spare, and that can be a lot for a senior to handle on their own. That's where Underdogs came in.
We started where we always do — building trust with the family. Our first steps were making sure Kenny had an insulated dog house, getting him up to date on vaccines, and setting him up with monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives. Kenny needed a foundation of care before anything else could happen.
As our relationship with the family grew, so did what was possible for Kenny. His owner gave us something that means the world in this work: a key to the yard. That kind of trust doesn't come overnight, and we don't take it lightly. With easier access came bigger opportunities — including enrolling Kenny in training lessons to work on his manners and leash skills.
Kenny is a smart and enthusiastic student, and thanks to a dedicated volunteer who shows up for him week after week, he's making real progress. He may still be a pup, but this boy is putting in the work and we're all rooting for him!
Sheba: Daycare Queen
Don't let her RBF fool you! The moment Sheba spots one of her volunteer friends, her whole world lights up.
Sheba has been part of the Underdogs family for a while now, and her story is a perfect example of what patient, relationship-centered outreach can accomplish. Through consistent trust-building with her owners over time, our team has been able to make real, lasting improvements to her quality of life.
First came a large, insulated dog house. Then we worked with the family to get electricity connected to the yard so we could install a heater. This past winter, Sheba's house stayed a cozy 70 degrees no matter what the weather brought.
This social butterfly loves people and pup friends alike, and once her owners saw how much she had to give, they trusted us with something special: weekly daycare. Every week, Sheba gets the social enrichment she deserves, romping and mingling like the queen she is.
None of this happens without her dedicated crew of volunteers who show up week after week to make it possible. Sheba may have started as an outside dog, but she's surrounded by a whole community that loves her...and she loves them right back!
